Applicants have a choice of 3 levels of membership as follows:

1) ACTO Membership

for UK core-trained professional counsellors with ACTO-approved additional online training. If you are a psychotherapist or a psychologist, your qualification will need to be recognised by UKCP or BPS.  Please contact us for advice about this if necessary.

2) ACTO Community Membership

for non-UK core-trained professional counsellors with ACTO-approved additional online training.

3) ACTO Student Membership

for UK core-trained professional counsellors who are enrolled on an ACTO-approved initial online training course.

Under the original ACTO membership criteria, UK-trained Professional counsellors without additional online training but who had completed at least 2 years’ supervised online contracted counselling were eligible to apply for ACTO membership.This route will close at the end of March 2015. Applying for ACTO Membership

If you can answer yes to all of the following, you are eligible to apply for ACTO membership with the use of the title ‘ACTO Member’.

 

  • Successfully completed a minimum of a 1 year full time or 2 year part time counselling and/or psychotherapy UK Diploma, delivered face to face, which includes a supervised placement as an integral part of the course and is recognised by the BACP.
  • Successfully completed initial online counselling training as detailed below.
  • Membership of a UK professional body that has an official complaints procedure (e.g. BACP) and can supply proof, when renewing ACTO membership, of continuing membership of that professional body.

Membership benefits

  • Access to the Members Area of the ACTO website
  • Eligibility for entry in the ACTO Directories

Professional Conduct

ACTO members are required to:

  • Comply with the rules of their Professional body in terms of professional indemnity insurance and ongoing supervision.
  • Accept and adhere to the ACTO Code of Ethics, which can be found here

Online training requirements

ACTO members are required to have completed initial online training with one of the providers listed below:

Documentary proof of your qualifications will need to be submitted with your application.

Documentary proof of your qualifications + Professional Body membership/s.

Directory Entries

ACTO offers two publicly searchable online directories for ACTO members; one for Therapists and another for Supervisors. ACTO Members only may also request and pay for a listing in either or both of the ACTO Directories – details are on the application form. Directory listings are not available to ACTO Community members, ACTO Student members or non ACTO members.

Fees

Annual ACTO Membership Fee is £20. An annual listing in one Directory costs £10, annual listing in both Directories is £15. Fees charged are non-refundable unless membership is terminated by ACTO. Payment should be made via online banking  – details at end of application form.

Applying for Community Membership

If you can answer yes to all of the following, you are eligible to apply for ACTO Community membership with the use of the title ‘ACTO Community Member’.

  • Successfully completed a minimum of a 1 year full time or 2 year part time counselling and/or psychotherapy non UK Diploma, delivered face to face, which includes a supervised placement as an integral part of the course and is recognised by a Professional body. If you are a psychotherapist or a psychologist, your qualification will need to be recognised by an appropriate Professional Body. Please contact us for advice about this if necessary.
  • Successfully completed online counselling* training as detailed below.
  • Membership of a Professional body that has an official complaints procedure and supply proof, when renewing ACTO membership, of continuing membership of that professional body.

  • Access to the Members Area of the ACTO website
  • Eligibility for our Yahoo members forum
  • ACTO Community Members are not eligible to advertise in the ACTO directories

Professional Conduct

ACTO Community members are required to:

  • Comply with the rules of their Professional body in terms of professional indemnity insurance and ongoing supervision.
  • Accept and adhere to the ACTO Code of Ethics, which can be found here

As ACTO cannot offer Directory advertising to ACTO Community Members, professional conduct complaints made against ACTO Community Members cannot be heard by ACTO.
ACTO Community Members are asked to confirm that they accept and adhere to the ACTO Code of Ethics and that in the event of a complaint, they consent to ACTO providing details of their Professional body to the complainant.

*In accordance with the BACP ‘glossary of terms’, ACTO defines online practice as follows: The provision of contracted counselling over the internet. Sessions are conducted via:

  • email (asynchronous),
  • forums (asynchronous),
  • chat rooms/instant messaging (synchronous)
  • Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP – online telephone services, synchronous)
  • Webcam (synchronous)
